<p>If you&#8217;ve ever heard of the author Barbara Kingsolver, she has written about the popular 100-mile diet in a recent novel entitled, &#8220;Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life.&#8221;  She dares to try the diet for a year eating foods produced within 100 miles of her Virginia home.  Of course, you can try this wherever you live. <span id="more-332"></span></p>
<p>I hope you enjoy this article about food, health, economy  and how it applies to that old slogan of &#8220;Think Globally, Act Locally&#8221;.</p>
<p>The premise of the 100-mile diet is to eat only organic whole foods grown and produced within that distance of your home. It means that you are consciously choosing local certified organic seasonal produce, locally caught seafood, and locally raised meat and dairy.</p>
<p>Theory has it that we are healthiest when we eat the freshest most nutritious foods produced in our immediate environments; these foods are generally less handled and have fewer if any chemical additives.</p>
<p>The more local foods are, like native berries or vegetables from your garden at home, the more you really know about what you&#8217;re eating: like the water your salmon swam in.</p>
<p>The 100-mile diet is also a sustainable diet not heavily reliant on oil supply needed for global transport: so cross off Arabica coffee of your breakfast list, but substitute chickory coffee or chamomile tea (from your garden) for your wake-up call.</p>
<p>Forgo coconut or mango and choose from a vast variety of local organic fruit in season: plums, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, melons and in fall apples,pears, grapes.</p>
<p>Through the 100-mile diet you also support your local farmer&#8217;s market where you will get the freshest local foods short of growing, hunting or catching it yourself.</p>
<p>Farmer&#8217;s markets are the easiest way to stick to the hundred mile diet. An abundance of fresh local milk, cheese, meat, fish, jams, honey, breads, organic produce and free range chicken and eggs await you at the Union Square Farmer&#8217;s Market.</p>
<p>The vendors can tell you everything you want to know about the additive and preservative free organic whole foods you can buy there because they produce it themselves.</p>
<p>Your next shrink-wrapped organic microwave meal hasn&#8217;t been sitting on a barge at port for a questionable amount of time? With this sustainable diet you will literally be one with the earth on which you stand for the healthiest self you can imagine.</p>
<p>And of course your skin will reflect it as you will have eliminated a lot of the preservatives added to foods or the lack of nutrients due to overly long transport. Your body will feel the difference and you&#8217;ll be looking out for mama earth as well.</p>
<p>This form of diet is a lifestyle and of course a challenge for most of us and implementing it to our modern life can be overwhelming as an entire system exist to make this difficult.</p>
<p>The changes however can be made slowly and with thought so as to not overwhelm you. Making this changes will give you and your family a healthier lifestyle while supporting your local economy.</p>

Unless you are a fabled “morning person,” you will be able to empathize.</p>
<p>The rest of us have a hard time waking up our minds and bodies in the wee hours of the morning and getting started on the day &#8211; unless of course we have something really exciting to look forward to that night like a big date or playoff game to watch.</p>
<p>So how do you solve this early-morning riddle and snap your brain into focus?<span id="more-329"></span></p>
<p>The most obvious answer is get the proper amount of sleep! But if that just never seems to happen, you may decide to down an energy drink or chow on some cereal or juice for some instant sugar energy. Sure these things may energize you long enough to make it through your class, but they won’t last, unless you continue to ply yourself with energy drinks for the rest of the day. When all is said and done, you’ll still end up feeling tired and grumpy. The best thing you can do is start off your day with a healthy breakfast, with a particular emphasis on getting sufficient protein.</p>
<p>A few of you may have jumped out of your seat cheering at finally having an excuse to eat a steak for breakfast. And, well, if that’s what you like to eat for breakfast, sure! It will do you far more good to eat a steak in the morning than it will to eat one late at night. Morning steaks will leave you feeling full and focused for the whole day, while evening steaks will just sit in your stomach like a big beefy log, all that wonderful energy sluggishly burned off during your sleep. But be warned, steaks can be high in fat, so do your best to limit yourself to as few a week as possible.</p>
<p>If your stomach is a bit more delicate and you just can’t look a steak in the eye that early in the morning, or maybe you prefer to avoid meat altogether, you can try one of these more breakfast-type options: white meat, fish, dairy products, rice and beans and soy products. Try a tasty piece of whole grain toast with peanut butter, a whole grain English muffin with egg and ham, or a homemade yogurt, fruit and granola parfait.</p>
<p>Most of you know protein for it’s famous ability to rebuild the body’s muscles. But protein plays other important roles in our body’s functions as well. It helps produce hormones, enzymes, and other chemicals. It is also the source for neurotransmitters in our brain—which you kill banging your head up against the wall before a test (haha, just kidding!). But seriously, your brain sends messages to your body through these neurotransmitters that are made with the amino acids in protein. If you don’t have enough protein, you don’t have enough messengers telling your body that it’s time to function.</p>
<p>Imagine a daredevil ready to jump over a row of cars, but instead of a motorcycle with a high-powered engine, he’s driving a lawn mower. Can you imagine an average lawn mower flying over the distance of a football field? Impossible. And so it is with protein. Without it, your body can’t properly send messages to the nerves located throughout your body, and therefore leaves you sluggish and unfocused.</p>
<p>Now, since you’re a student, here’s a bit of homework for you: Check out the US Department of Agriculture’s newly revised food pyramid called My Pyramid. There you will find tips about what important nutrients you should be consuming, as well as tips on how to get a good, high-protein breakfast.</p>
<p>It would be world-changing if every teacher added “eat a good breakfast” to all of their assignments. The average GPA is bound to go up. That would make an interesting study for any of you students out there looking for a thesis idea or research project. Why don’t you give it a try, and focus on eating a healthy, high protein breakfast for a few weeks and see how you feel at the end? Unless you are already a meticulously healthy-conscious person, I guarantee you will notice a difference.</p>

It’s not a bad thing to have belly fats but would it not be better if you had a flat stomach?   It’s easy to gain weight and fat, but it is indeed difficult to lose it. So here are some proven steps that show you how to lose belly fat:</p>
<p>1.	First, <strong>perform regular exercise</strong>.   You can exercise in several ways. Jogging, walking, swimming, weight lifting, bike riding and climbing the stairs are all activities that you can do every day. Whether you do one, or all of them, as long as you do it regularly, it will be of great help in burning fat from the whole body and not just the belly.  Here’s a simple exercise tip.<span id="more-322"></span></p>
<p>While sitting, do some contraction with your stomach. Do this for about thirty seconds with your stomach muscles, even if you are at work or at home. Take a deep breath first, and then contract the muscles in your stomach as firmly as you can, after which breath out very slowly.   Leg raises, knee raises and Pilates are among the most popular exercises that are effective in removing fat. Flatten your tummy with these exercises by doing them regularly. In addition, they can also help you in keeping your body healthy.</p>
<p>2.	Secondly,<strong> drink lots of water</strong> and reduce, or if you can, totally give up drinking alcohol and soft drinks or soda.  It is very important to drink water every day. This is because proper water intake removes toxins in your body as well as removing all fat deposits.</p>
<p>The daily recommended water intake is at least eight glasses of water or about sixty four ounces. To be exact, take your weight and follow the ratio: ½ ounce of water per pound of weight.  Alcoholic beverages contain pure calories but are of zero food value, while soda contains about seven teaspoons of sugar. This being the case, these two will do no good to your body. It is best that you lessen or even stop drinking them.</p>
<p>3.	Thirdly, <strong>eat foods that can burn fats</strong>.   Among them are apples, cabbages, oranges, mandarins, strawberries, raspberries as well as brussell sprouts. These foods contain nutrients that actually burn fats and will also help you maintain a healthy body.</p>
<p>4.	Fourthly, include in your daily meals foods <strong>rich in protein</strong>.   It is a fact that proteins have a higher thermic effect than carbohydrates and fats, plus they will increase your metabolism rate. Apart from this, they help you build up muscles. It is believed (but not scientifically proven) that if you have more muscles, you can do better at burning fats.</p>
<p><strong>5.	And last, never starve yourself</strong>.   Not eating anything in order to lose belly fats is a crazy thing to do. It won’t do you any good because as a result, your body will not function properly.</p>
<p>You may be able to lose weight if you starve yourself but in the end you will just become someone who is sick. A body with a normal proportion of fats looks much better than one that looks unhealthy. Which would you rather choose?  Going through the process is not an easy thing to do, and it is not something that happens overnight. You have to put effort into it so that your journey towards earning a better-looking body will become successful. Just follow the above steps and you won’t get lost.</p>

<p><strong>Healthy meal.</strong></p>
<p>When we say healthy, we usually attach labor to its preparation, but this is not necessarily correct. How about a bowl of vegetable salad, is it hard to prepare? Or how about preparing yogurts or having whole grain cereals for breakfast? Does it really take up all of your time? See, the problem is we lack planning to do these things.</p>
<p>Once you stack everything in your fridge it basically becomes what you eat, that is why having a good grocery list is essential as well. Make sure you stuff in healthy food items like your green veggies, your favorite fruits, your whole grains, fish- meat or low trans-fat meat which you can easily bake, and different dairy products.</p>
<p><strong>Healthy snacks.</strong></p>
<p>Healthy snacks composed of fresh fruits alone would be the best snack for you. You have all the nutrients to get you going through the day and you don’t have to worry about calories. You can definitely eat your finger fruits as you get going. Start to lessen your fast food and sweet intake and be cautious of what you eat.</p>
<p><strong>Watch out on what you take in.</strong></p>
<p>Certain beverages and other meals will give you more problems and issues. You can easily gain weight by just drinking sodas regularly, although drinking water is ideal. You may also have diet sodas to decrease your calorie intake.  Once again fast foods, processed food, alcohol, junk food, greasy, salty, and sugary are a no-no and should be taken in very small amount. One technique is to go small size,or half it, and save it for later.</p>
<p><strong>Walking is all you need.</strong></p>
<p>Did you know that brisk walking is a form of cardio exercise and it is basically  all you need to lose weight? Find ways to walk more. You can walk to your office or walk up the stairs instead of elevator. Some experts suggest that you walk for about 10 minutes every after meal or during your break time at work to lose weight.  That could add up to 30 minutes of exercise for the day.<br />
Plan for the weekend.</p>
<p>Weekends should be free and made it a time for yourself. It can be the best time to play your favorite sports, or go outside and have camping or any physical  activities. This may be simple, but once you get it as a habit, you will surely see results soon enough.</p>
<p><strong>Be productive.</strong></p>
<p>Focus on what you really need to do and avoid time wasters. To be productive also means to find more ways on how to promote better health and weight loss. Create new ways, open your mind and be creative. The more you personalize your plan the more it works out.</p>
<p><strong>Time management.</strong></p>
<p>Proper time management would give you better results. Most people get busy because they don’t find ways to make up things. You can do things systematically and save more time. You can also appoint and assign task to some people that care for you. It could be your wife or your kid, they can prepare your healthy breakfast or lunch. This is one way to decrease your worries. Also with proper time management you get more rest and proper sleep, which is vital in <a href="http://www.weightlosshelpandtips.net/">weight loss</a> as well.</p>
